The short answer

Across our 170 wooden chairs, armchairs and bar stools for contract use, a typical restaurant and hotel chair has a seat 48 cm high and 42.5 cm deep, and is 46 cm wide overall. Armchairs are wider (56 cm) and deeper (46 cm). Banquet chairs are the narrowest (41 cm) and the shallowest (40 cm). Bar stools have a seat 77 cm high. All figures are medians.

These are not industry averages. They are the measurements of every seating model we make in Troyan, Bulgaria, as published on each model's page on rikostyle.com (source 1). We publish them because buyers, designers and students ask for real numbers, not only rules of thumb.

  • Overall width is the width of the whole chair, as listed on rikostyle.com. It is not the width of the seat between the arms.
  • Arm height is measured from the floor to the top of the armrest.
  • Care home chairs without arms are left out of the arm height column; 7 of the 17 care home chairs have arms, at a median of 67 cm.

How we counted

  1. What is in: every chair, armchair and bar stool in our range with published dimensions, 170 models in total.
  2. What is out: tables, trolleys and other accessories; a children's high chair, a child's chair and a foot stool.
  3. No double counting: some models are listed in two categories on rikostyle.com. When both listings have the same dimensions, we count the model once. Some of our older guides count every listing, so their totals are a little higher (for example 99 dining chairs instead of 86); the medians differ by 0.5 cm at most.
  4. Missing values: a model without a published value for one dimension is left out of that column only. That is why the count in the chart notes can be lower than the number of models.
  5. Median, not mean: the median is the middle model. It is not pulled up or down by one unusual chair.
  6. Updated with the catalogue: this page is rebuilt from our product data every time the catalogue changes.

What the numbers are for

  • Restaurant owners: check that a new chair is close to the median of its type before you order a hundred.
  • Interior designers: use the ranges to brief a supplier, and the seating planner to count chairs per table.
  • Care homes: seat height and arms matter most. Read our care home chairs guide.
  • Retailers and importers: the CSV loads straight into a catalogue or a product information system.

We make all of these chairs in solid beech, many also in oak, and offer them to furniture retailers and importers, interior designers, restaurant and hotel owners, event rental companies and care homes. We are looking for long-term partners in each of these groups.
